—SABBATH, Part 2—

Some groups insist that “The sabbath was made for man” (Mark 2:27), meaning ALL mankind. Then they ignore the second clause of the verse; “and not man for the sabbath.” It was always a provision for man’s need, but never a yoke for man’s neck. The Lord Jesus said “the Son of man is Lord EVEN of the sabbath day” (Matt 12:8). Now, why is this significant?

Because by the time you get to Matthew chapter 12, Christ has already shown himself to be victor over the devil’s temptations (Matt 4:1-11), healer of “all manner of sickness and all manner of disease” (Matt 4:23-24), commander of the centurion’s sick servant (Matt 8:13), master over the waves of the sea (Matt 8:23-27), ruler over those possessed with devils (Matt 8:28-34), and the forgiver of men’s sins (Matt 9:1-5). He testified to his own power to heal the lame, give sight to the blind, open deaf ears, and raise the dead back to life (Matt 11:5-6). He was the Lord whose teaching would even supersede that of the scribes (see Matt 5:28, 5:32, 5:34, 5:39, etc). Now if Christ has authority over the powers of nature, disease and even the teaching of the law, he certainly is “Lord ALSO of the sabbath day”(Mark 2:28), and can interpret the Sabbath any way he wants to without explaining himself to an Adventist. Is that clear?

Another great principle is that “In the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established” (Deut 17:6, 19:15, II Cor 13:1). So we see Paul preached without sinning on the first day of the week (Acts 20:7). The day of Pentecost fell, and the Church began on the first day of the week (Lev 23:15-16, Acts 2). Believers took collections on the first day of the week (I Cor 16:1-2). Paul taught Christian liberty regarding special days of the week (Rom 14:4-6), and told the Colossians to ignore anyone teaching otherwise (Col 2:16-17). So, with at least six New Testament “witnesses” in agreement, let this be the end of it!
