—SABBATH—
As Bible students should know, the word
Sabbath
means rest. We read that God “RESTED on the
seventh day from all his work which he had made”
(Genesis 2:2). Moses explained its meaning to
Israel, saying “Tomorrow is the REST of the holy
SABBATH unto the Lord” (Ex 16:23). Concerning
the seventh day specifically, God commanded that,
“IN IT thou shalt not do any work” (Ex 20:10).
For some, these texts seem to prove that God
requires us to rest and worship ONLY on the seventh
day.
Question: Is the seventh-day Sabbath, given to Old
Testament Jews before the time of Christ, still
binding on New Testament church members today,
most of whom are Gentiles?
The problem for these groups is not a lack of love
for God, but a LACK OF SCRIPTURE for their beliefs.
There is no command anywhere in the Book of Genesis
for anyone to “rest” on the seventh day, or to
“keep” the Sabbath. From Genesis 2 until Exodus
16-20 over twenty centuries passed in which God was
SILENT about the Sabbath. Neither Adam, Eve,
Methuselah, Noah, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and his
sons, nor two million Jews fleeing Egypt knew
anything about it! The idea that God commanded the
Sabbath to Adam in the garden of Eden, as some
claim, is ridiculous on its face. For until Gen
3:19, Adam had not done any work
which he needed to rest from!
God declared, “It (the Sabbath) is a SIGN
between me and the CHILDREN OF ISRAEL for ever”
(Ex 31:17), but was only revealed to them upon their
exodus from Egypt (Ezek 20:10-20, which see). Peter
said to command Jewish observances of the Gentiles
would constitute a “yoke…which neither our
fathers nor we were able to bear” (Acts 15:10).
