On August 24, 1572 the infamous St. Bartholomew's Day
massacre took place. At midnight Catholic troops began to break
into the homes of French Hugenots (Protestants) and drag them into the
streets to be tortured and executed. More than 50,000 people were
murdered. Pope Gregory XIII was so pleased that he had a
commemorative coin struck in honor of the event. On one side is the
Pope's image, on the other is a depiction of the massacre with the
inscription that reads, "Slaughter of the Hugenots, 1572."
