—HONESTY—
Peter and John stated, “we cannot but speak the
things which we have SEEN and HEARD” (Acts
4:20). Legal witnesses are expected to tell “the
truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,”
so help them God. Believers who are commanded to be
witnesses for Jesus Christ (Matt 28:19-20, Acts 1:8)
are to do the same.
If nothing else, a believer has his own conversion
to declare; “Let the redeemed of the LORD
SAY SO, whom he hath redeemed from the hand of the
enemy”
(Psalm 107:2).
The apostle John boldly described himself as “the
disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote
these things: and we know that HIS TESTIMONY IS
TRUE” (John 21:24). Not surprisingly, the gospel
of John, with its emphasis on the deity of Christ,
is criticized more than any other book in the New
Testament.
Jesus plainly said, “I am the way, the truth, and
the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.”
(John 14:6) To be an honest witness for Jesus
Christ means laying it on the line. If he is the
way, Buddhism is a dead-end street. If he is the
truth, Mohammed was a liar. And if he is the life,
the “Virgin Mary” offers only death.
We are to “Provide things HONEST in the sight of
all men” (Rom 12:17), and to lead “a quiet
and peaceable life in all godliness and HONESTY”
(I Tim 2:2). But the truth hurts, and the messenger
is in danger because of the message. So be it. The
world’s best Christian once asked, “Am I
therefore become your enemy because I tell you the
TRUTH?” (Gal 4:16)
