Bible Believers
—SALVATION—
The
Apostle Paul’s text of Ephesians 2:8-9 is just as true
today as it ever was,
“For by grace are ye saved
through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the
gift of God; Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
Paul
also wrote, “But to
him that worketh not, but
believeth on him that justifieth
the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness”
(Romans 4:5). God still saves and regenerates sinners
apart from their own efforts.
If
these verses are true (and we have no doubts), it means
the following things can NOT save a soul from Hell: Good
deeds, church membership, water baptism, confirmation,
the Golden Rule, gifts to charity, soup kitchens,
homeless shelters, the Ten Commandments, the seven
sacraments, the 32 degrees, the twelve steps, good
feelings, the Republican party, special “undergarments,”
the Democratic party, holy communion, the Virgin Mary,
lodge memberships, the name “Jehovah,” temple marriages,
or even good intentions and a winning smile.
Many
Christians think that the nice man or woman they know
who demonstrates such likeable qualities must surely be
a Christian. Yet sadly, without the new birth they will
still spend eternity burning in a lake of fire
(Revelation 20:15). Christ said,
“Except a man
be born again, he cannot see
the kingdom of God”
(John 3:3). Let us never forget this.
The
Apostle John summarized all this in one of the simplest
verses of the New Testament when he wrote,
“He that hath the Son hath
life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life”
(I John 5:12).
